Join us for our non-fiction book discussion group. This month’s title is: Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism by Rachel Maddow.
Rachel Maddow recounts the long, hidden history of American authoritarianism, tracing a secretive far-right movement that, during World War II, spread disinformation to undermine the U.S. war effort and align public sentiment with the Axis powers. This effort, well-funded and coordinated, aimed to dismantle democracy, promote antisemitism, and ultimately install authoritarian rule—often in lockstep with armed paramilitary groups preparing for violent insurrection.
While brave activists and journalists worked to expose the conspiracy, the U.S. Justice Department intervened in 1941 with prosecutions that faced powerful resistance from influential political figures involved in the plot. The legal system’s failure to fully confront the threat allowed its legacy to endure, leaving behind a warning—and a tale of courage—that resonates powerfully today.
