Beginning at 1:00 p.m. on March 18, 1925, a tornado originated near Ellington, MO, roared into southern Illinois and, after three and a half hours on the ground, eventually died out in Indiana. With 600 dead, 1600 injured, and untold damage, it was a major catastrophe.
