Chicago women made Illinois the first state east of the Mississippi to grant limited voting rights to women in 1913. The women through their clubs and progressive reform ideas were the backbone of this victory. Illinois’s success influenced other suffragists to use the same tactics in their states. Illinois became the first state to ratify the 19th amendment, giving all women in the United States the right to vote in 1920.
Meet the Speaker: Laurie Russell specializes in early Chicago women and their impact on Chicago. Using historic images and quotes, her presentation will reveal the unknown stories of women and their contribution to Chicago and our country.
