Mickalene Thomas is a contemporary African-American visual artist. Born in 1971, she is best known for her large-scale, rhinestone-encrusted paintings celebrating Black women. Her work often re-stages scenes from 19th-century painters such as Henri Matisse and Édouard Manet, claiming the agency of womanhood while deconstructing the art historical canon.
Thomas's portrait of Michelle Obama was the first individual portrait done of the First Lady and was exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery. Her work is in numerous public collections including The Museum of Modern Art, New York and The Art Institute of Chicago.
Use rhinestones, photographs, and bold patterns to create a portrait in her style.
