We often learn about the past through films, novels, and other forms of entertainment, but does that risk confusing facts with fiction? When reading Lawhon’s novel The Pirate Queen- a work of historical fiction about the legendary Irish pirate Grace O’Malley - what can we rely on, what should we be skeptical of, and how can we tell the difference? Historian Shereen Ilahi considers these questions and offers some context for thinking about the lives of women in sixteenth century Ireland.
Meet the Speaker: Shereen Ilahi is Professor of Modern European History at North Central College in Naperville, where she has been teaching since 2008. She earned her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin. Her 2016 book analyzes British imperial violence in India and in Ireland just after the First World War.
