Commissioned by the Canadian Wildlife Service to study wolves, the author moved close to the pack of wolves. After losing his initial fear, he becomes fond of, and finds much to admire, in the maligned animals. His observations of the wolves at work, play and domestic activities lead him to the conclusion that the wolf is not a merciless predator, but a vital segment in the balance of nature.
